February 22, 2025: Meridith Hartsfield: Glass Beads Our January Guest Artist
Meredith Hartsfield is our guest artist for January 25th meeting. She will have a demonstration while working with glass beads.
Basic description of my process: lampwork or torchwork is the use of blown glass, in rods or strips, melted in a single flame, the lamp or torch, and reshaped by hand into a different form. All color is within the glass or applied to it using the heat of the flame. I build a base bead in the size and color necessary on a steel mandrel, then reshape using gravity and hand tools, decorate it using other glass rods and stringers (glass rods pulled in thin strands that can be used to "draw" a design). After annealing, beads are removed from the mandrel when cool. I usually design jewelry pieces to showcase the beads- but sometimes the other way 'round!
Beads are a fundamental human creation, art small enough to hold in the hand and wear on our bodies near our hearts. My work travels with people to places I'll never see, will remain here on earth long after I'm gone... glass beads are essentially forever!
That is comforting to me.
I'm still exploring hot glass, will never learn it all, and am never ever bored while my torch is fired up!
She also states "Artists are born, not made, in my opinion- so I'll say my career began with fat pencils and Prang watercolors on tablet paper. Later I discovered beads by accident (scuffed up from under the playground swing) and recognized them for the treasure that they are!
Although I did my share of design, production work, illustration etc. as a commercial artist, I've been making jewelry and enjoying 3-D media for a long time. As a jewelry maker I wanted handmade glass beads, but cost was prohibitive, so I was thrilled when a glassblower friend taught me how to make a bead. After that I really couldn't stop, hot glass is by far the most exciting medium I've ever worked in. Every piece, whether you work large or small, is an immediate project; once you start you must finish, no setting it down, thinking it over, coming to it later with a fresh idea. Every piece is a dance with gravity and disaster- too hot, too cold, too slow or fast- it's ruined. Also, no touching- you may only communicate with your emerging work through tools- challenging!"
